Pixel phones will be manufactured in India from 2024, Google says in a new press release. announcement calling it “Taking the next big step in our Pixel journey to India”.

Rick Osterloh, SVP of Devices and Services, says, “We” – meaning “we at Google” – “have been humbled by the way India has embraced our continued smartphone innovations”:

Today, we see an even bigger opportunity to make Pixel smartphones accessible to more people in India, and we are very excited to announce our plan to manufacture Pixel smartphones in India. We plan to start with the Pixel 8 and will collaborate with international and domestic manufacturers to produce Pixel smartphones locally. We expect these devices to begin deployment in 2024, joining India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.

As 9to5Google Note, Pixel phones were largely manufactured in various Asian countries, starting in China, and then (in 2019) began moving production out of China and into Vietnam.

Rick Osterloh highlights that “India is a priority market for Pixel smartphones” and that over the past few years, “India has established itself as a truly world-class manufacturing hub, creating a thriving environment enabling businesses to thrive.”

Nothing is already there, Apple plans to expand 5 times

Just like the Nothing Phone (1), the second iteration of this ultra-sleek phone has also been manufactured in India, with reports as early as June this year.

There is another player who likes to make smartphones in India: none other than Apple. In addition, the Cupertino giant is considering an expansion of its industrial production in India. Insiders say Apple plans to produce five times more iPhones in India over the next 5 years.
