Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identification number issued by the Indian government through UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India). This unique number is assigned to every resident of India and is vital for many reasons. The Aadhaar number is proof of a person's identity and allows citizens to benefit from government programs and benefits.

The Aadhaar number includes biometric information about the cardholder, including iris scans and fingerprints. It also contains demographic data such as name, date of birth, gender, address, photograph of the cardholder and Aadhaar number which are unique to each citizen.

Aadhaar cards can be used as proof of identity and help in accessing government services, availing subsidies, opening bank accounts, etc. There are two main categories into which Aadhaar cards have been divided: Aadhaar card for senior citizens and Aadhaar card for children. The Aadhaar card for adults is public knowledge and includes the biometric data of the individual.

What is the Aadhaar Blue Card?

The Baal or Blue Aadhaar card was introduced by the UIDAI in 2018 for children below five years of age. This provides them with a unique identification and unlike the regular Aadhaar card, this one does not need biometric information. It only contains a photo of the child, information about their gender and an Aadhaar number.

Parents of guardians must update the Baal Aadhaar card with the biometric information when the child turns five years of age and again at the age of 15 years.

Documents Required to Apply for Baal Aadhaar Card

  • Parents applying for their newborn's Aadhaar card can submit either the birth certificate or the hospital discharge slip as a valid document for registration of the Aadhaar blue card.
  • If the child is older, their school ID card can also be used to apply for a Baal Aadhaar card.
  • Parents’ Aadhaar card is mandatory.
  • Proof of address is required.
  • Two passport-sized photos of the child will be required.

Why the name “Aadhaar Blue Card”?

The term Blue Aadhaar Card is used to refer to the Baal Aadhaar card because these cards are printed in blue and are therefore different from adult cards. The color difference allows for easy communication and understanding and reminds parents to update biometric data at the age of 5.
