Apple Recommends Against Putting Your iPhone In A Bag Of Rice: Check Out Troubleshooting Steps Here،

This is one of the cases where people often believe what they see on social media platforms. While browsing reels or Shorts, you must have come across these viral videos where people put their smartphone in a bag or a container of rice, after dropping it in the sink or a bucket of water. A few moments later, the phone starts working again. But does this method work? Here's what one of the most popular smartphone brands in the world has to say.

What should you do if you see a liquid detection alert on your iPhone?

If you see “Charging not available” or “Liquid detected in USB-C/Lightning connector” errors, you should first unplug the charging cable immediately. Both errors mean the phone has detected liquid in the connector or charging port, which could corrode internal components and lead to permanent damage. Therefore, after disconnecting your iPhone, you should make sure that it is completely dry before plugging it back in.

  1. Gently tap your iPhone against your hand with the connector facing down. This should remove any excess fluid from the port.
  2. Leave your phone in a dry place with some air circulation.
  3. After 30 minutes, try charging with a USB-C or Lightning connector.
  4. If the error appears again, leave the phone for a while longer. Apple mentions that it can take up to 24 hours for the phone to completely dry.
  5. If the phone still does not charge, unplug the adapter cable. Then unplug the adapter from the wall and connect it to another power outlet.

Things Apple specifically advises against

In the update support document, Apple advises users not to dry their iPhone using an external heat source, such as a hairdryer. Additionally, users should not insert a cotton swab or paper towel into the connector, as this may damage the internal components. Finally, Apple says users should not leave their iPhone in a bag of rice. “This could allow small rice particles to damage your iPhone,” the support document mentions.

Even though rice has some absorption capacity, a report from Brightside.me mentions that it cannot suck up water fast enough for the method to be effective. Second, if tiny particles of rice enter through the crevices of your iPhone, the starch they contain could trap moisture inside your iPhone, accelerating corrosion. Finally, particles can get stuck in the USB-C port or Lighting port, making things even more difficult.
