Victorian batting star Matt Short has underlined his status as next in line for a regular place in Australia’s white-ball squads after blasting his second century in three innings since returning from India.

Short, who made his international debut in T20s and ODIs against South Africa before the World Cup, backed up his third Sheffield Shield century last weekend with his second List A ton, making 134 from 100 balls in a one-day clash. with Queensland.

The 27-year-old, who was released from injury reserve duty at the World Cup last week, smashed 13 fours and six sixes in a stunning performance against the Bulls in Mackay.

Short was the second highest run-scorer in last summer’s Big Bash, making 458 runs, including his maiden BBL century, opening for the Adelaide Strikers in the most successful run chase in the tournament’s history (230 ).

He was named player of the tournament, earned a call-up to the Indian Premier League and recently signed a new three-year contract with the Strikers.

Short’s innings at Mackay came as part of a 127-run opening stand with Tom Rogers as the Vics accumulated a score of 6-349, more than they made in the One of four completed Shield rounds this season which resulted in two heavy defeats.
