It has been revealed that two-time premiership winner Des Hasler was one of the lowest paid coaches in the NRL during his time at the Sea Eagles.

Hasler, who is now the Titans coach, is suing Manly after he was sacked 12 months ago following the club’s infamous pride jersey saga.

The 62-year-old coached the Sea Eagles between 2004 and 2011 before making a shock move to the Bulldogs just days after winning the grand final.

Hasler led Canterbury to two grand finals before a rocky exit in 2017 and he returned to Brookvale for the 2019 NRL season.

In his first season at Manly, Hasler’s base salary was $680,000, which was set to increase to $720,000 in 2023 and 2024, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The NRL’s top coaches, including Wayne Bennett, Craig Bellamy and Trent Robinson, all earn more than $1 million a season.

Halser also had an ambassadorial role with the club, worth around $200,000 per season, with the money going to a company co-owned by Hasler and his wife – according to the report.

Hasler’s 2023 option would have automatically triggered if Manly had reached the finals last year, but they finished 11th after the pride jersey fiasco and the coach was sacked before having the chance to start the season 2023.

Hasler would have been entitled to a lump sum payment equal to half his base salary plus ambassador fees as part of his dismissal, but he claims he missed the opportunity to get an extension because the season of the club collapsed after the rainbow jersey debacle.

In documents filed with the Supreme Court, Manly rejected claims the rainbow jersey debacle cost Hasler the chance to lead the club to the final, stressing there were other problems at stake like form and injuries.

The Titans will be embroiled in a legal battle, with Manly set to subpoena club executives as part of their defense, according to the SMH.

The Sea Eagles reportedly plan to subpoena phone and email records of Titans officials in an effort to avoid a large payment to Hasler.

The case begins Friday before the Supreme Court.
