KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes recently added to his burgeoning collection of sports franchises by purchasing the ownership group of the Alpine Formula One racing team. He said Wednesday that he may not stop investing in franchises until he achieves his goal for his post-playing career, which is to become an NFL team owner.

“Eventually when I’m done playing,” Mahomes said of his interest in NFL ownership. “I think Tom [Brady] trying to do it right now, but that’s definitely where you want to get to. I love this sport and want to give back in any way I can. When I’m done playing, I’m obviously going to be a Chiefs fan, but at the same time, I want to have that competitive edge that I’ve always had my whole life. »

Mahomes noted that becoming an NFL club owner can be difficult, so he would consider purchasing other sports once he is done playing.

“I always look around,” he said. “I can’t do it in the NFL while I’m playing, so I’m always watching other sports. It’s hard to get into all the sports and the NBA and all these different types of things, but I still keep going my ears are open. If they give me the opportunity I’ll jump on it.

Other investors in Alpine Formula One include Mahomes’ teammate, tight end Travis Kelce, and professional golfer Rory McIlroy. Mahomes’ other involvements in professional sports include a minority stake in three Kansas City franchises: baseball’s Royals and two soccer teams, Sporting KC of the MLS and the Current of the NWSL.

“I think everyone can see the appeal,” Mahomes said of owning an F1 team. “I’ve been able to do a few races now. Seeing the environment and watching ‘Drive to Survive’ on Netflix, you see how competitive it is. Any time you get the opportunity to participate in that. .. I’m competitive on anything we can get, and hopefully this can open up some big opportunities and we can go to some of these races and have a little interest in the game.

“They came to us with the opportunity, I jumped at the chance. I’m excited… It’ll be cool to be able to go to some events and hopefully go to some other places. Maybe besides Miami, maybe go to other places around the world.”

As for becoming an F1 driver, Mahomes said: “I don’t know if it’s in my contract. We’ll see. I know [Chiefs general manager Brett] Veach is a big F1 guy, so maybe he’ll let me go around the track at least once. »
