Vote now: Would you buy a foldable iPhone?

This week we heard the rumor that Apple is working on a foldable smartphone. Of course, this is hard work and the company appears to be facing multiple challenges. Given that early movers like Samsung and Motorola also have a lot to figure out, this isn't surprising.

However, Apple engineers seem to have very ambitious goals. They want to create a foldable that is as thick as a regular iPhone when folded. This means a smartphone half as thick as current models. The crease and bump in the middle of the screen are other issues Apple wants to fix.

Even leaving hardware aside, Apple seems to be struggling to come up with specific features for the potential foldable iPhone. The company is looking for use cases that would make these devices a worthwhile purchase for many people. In the case of Apple, the company behind the world's best-selling smartphone, “many people” means everyone.

One of the major constraints seems to be the price. Even today, foldable smartphones are more expensive than comparable non-foldable models. With the prices of non-foldable flagship smartphones rising, another very high-end device could turn against Apple.

Apple will probably manage to find solutions to some of these problems and release a foldable iPhone. Certainly, there are enough people who would like a foldable smartphone but are locked into Apple's ecosystem. Even so, it's unclear whether people really want a foldable iPhone.
