Focus on AI safety: Apple, Google, Meta, and Microsoft unite to make sure AI doesn’t outsmart us،

New flagship smartphones, like the recent Galaxy S24 series or the Pixel 8 series, already come with AI features. While there is excitement about generative AI, which can generate text, photos and videos from open-ended prompts, it also raises concerns.

Some fear it could replace jobs, influence elections and even surpass human capabilities. That’s why US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo launched a new initiative called the US AI Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC).

According to ReutersMore than 200 companies, including big tech names like Apple, Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Qualcomm and Nvidia, have joined the AISIC initiative at the request of the White House.

The group's work is to focus on key tasks outlined in President Biden's AI executive document in October. order. This includes creating red team guidelines, assessing capabilities, managing risks, ensuring safety and security, and adding watermarks to synthetic content.

Last year, major AI companies committed to adding watermarks to AI-generated content as a security measure. With this in mind, Meta is preparing to start tagging AI-generated content on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.

The consortium, the largest gathering of testing and evaluation teams, aims to lay the foundation for “new measurement science in AI security.” AISIC appears to be the first step toward meeting the majority of the ordinance's requirements. It is still unclear whether there are different levels of membership or whether there are involvement requirements for participants.

All of the tech companies mentioned are working on generative AI in different ways. Google is one of the leaders in AI innovation (it has just rolled out its new chatbot, Gemini, for Android). Microsoft, working with OpenAI, made ChatGPT a major talking point last year. Qualcomm, with its Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, has opened the door to AI-based features in smartphones. Apple is also reportedly working to improve Siri using AI technology.
