Google and HP to manufacture Chromebooks in India
In a significant development for India’s technology and education sectors, Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently announced a strategic partnership with HP to produce Chromebooks in India. Manufacturing of these Chromebook devices is expected to take place at the Flex factory located near Chennai, India. HP has been using this facility for the production of a range of laptops and desktops since August 2020. From October 2, 2023, the production line will expand to include HP India Chromebooks, meeting the growing demand for Profitable PCs.
This development not only demonstrates the growing capabilities of the Indian manufacturing industry but is also a significant step forward in the ‘Make in India’ development agenda. The initiative, launched to promote local manufacturing and boost India’s economic growth, has been remarkably successful. A recent report by Counterpoint Research reveals that more than 2 billion mobile phones were manufactured in India between 2014 and 2022 under the ‘Make in India’ programme, demonstrating a remarkable compound annual growth rate of 23%.
