Remember Bluesky? The social networking app is now open to everyone،

Bluesky, the open source replacement for Twitter that launched in a limited way last year, recently announced that it was getting rid of its waiting list, so now anyone can join their decentralized social media app. This new development is a big step forward for the project, which started as an internal Twitter project and later became a separate company.

Launched first as a closed beta on iOS and then on Android, Bluesky managed to generate some initial buzz amid Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter (now called “X”) and the resulting controversy . Twitter users, unhappy with changes to the app and its management, were desperate for an alternative, and Bluesky seemed at the time to be the app that would fill that need.
However, Bluesky was not accessible to everyone. You needed an invite code to enter, and once you got in, you realized the app was missing some very basic features. The initial lack of proper notifications (which it does today) was a major hurdle for many users to overcome, and the app slowly became a more closed community of loyal users who were looking for something new in the world of social media.

Now with over 3 million users, Bluesky will be a lot like people used to Twitter and Threads. Posts, also called “skeets,” are arranged chronologically, and you can choose to watch streams hand-curated by other users.

Bluesky is committed to decentralization and aims to solve problems caused by the power and impact of big tech companies on the way we interact online. CEO Jay Graber was quoted as saying that “the future of social media should be open and decentralized,” a mantra the app has always lived by. Additionally, Bluesky plans to add a standalone moderation system to allow separate groups to create their own “tagging services” for material.

It remains to be seen whether Bluesky will be able to stay in the competitive world of social media for long. Although many find its commitment to decentralization and community moderation very appealing, the truth is that the platform must be able to attract a large number of users who can contribute to the growth of the ecosystem. We don't yet know if it will become the alternative to Twitter that we initially thought it would be, but we should definitely keep an eye on its growth.
