A wave of Australian cricketers are reportedly competing in the county championship next season due to an unusually clear schedule.

According to The Telegeraph, Australians not participating in the Indian Premier League and T20 World Cup, hosted by the West Indies and the United States of America, could play in England.

Australia will tour New Zealand in March 2024, but will then not play again until September, leaving at least five months of fresh air for players to play County Cricket.

Durham, who will return to Division One next season, have already reportedly signed seamer Scott Boland as part of a huge recruitment coup.

The 34-year-old would play in both the Championship competition and the Vitality Blast, England’s T20 competition.

Interestingly, Nathan Lyon is said to be in talks with Lancashire regarding a potential contract for 2024 and beyond.

The 35-year-old had already signed for Hampshire ahead of the 2020 season, but his contract was terminated due to the pandemic.

Meanwhile, Marnus Labuschagne is set to return to Glamorgan and currently sits fifth in the ICC Test batsman rankings.

Usman Khawaja, Alex Carey and Todd Murphy are also said to be targets in County’s search for a quality overseas player.

Steve Smith is reportedly not playing for Sussex with the South Coast criticized for allowing an Australian to adapt to local conditions ahead of the 2023 Ashes.
