LAS VEGAS — The Philadelphia Eagles will host the NFL's first regular-season game in Brazil, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced Monday during his State of the NFL press conference at Allegiant Stadium.

The Eagles, who last played an international game in 2018, will face an opponent to be announced in São Paolo on Friday, September 6, the day after the NFL season kicks off on Thursday evening. This will be the first Friday NFL game on opening weekend in more than 50 years.

“We are incredibly excited about our growth globally,” Goodell said. “We are confident that we can become a global sport in the near future. Our shareholders are committed to enabling more matches to be played each year, on a global scale. We are excited by the response from fans and our partners “I think it's a great opportunity for the league and we're committed to making it a global sport.”

The Eagles' home opponents for the 2024 season are the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Washington Commanders, Cleveland Browns, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Packers of Green Bay and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“Brazil is new for us this year,” Goodell added. “We think this gives us the opportunity to access more fans. Not just here in the United States, but globally. And I think it's going to be a huge success. We're excited.”

According to NFL.com, the league has 38 million fans in Brazil with “increased” interest in recent years for the playoffs and Super Bowl. The league's website also mentioned the 49,000-seat Corinthians Arena, which hosted World Cup matches in 2014 as well as Olympic soccer matches in 2016, as the likely venue for the match.

The NFL already plays international games in England and Germany and could target Spain in 2025, as owners passed a resolution in the fall requiring each team to play an international game once every four years.
