‘No demons in the wicket,’ says Bumrah after wrecking England،
Jasprit Bumrah wasn't even supposed to bowl when he came in and destroyed England.
“When Mukesh started after lunch,” Bumrah said after the second day's match in Visakhapatnam, where his 6 for 45 gave India a 143-run lead in the first innings, “there was a reverse swing, then I got the message that the ball was reversed. – the swing and the ball are relatively hard, so I may have to come back early and take a turn.”
When the ball was new, it didn't really do anything and Bumrah even got four fours out of six balls. His first five overs actually cost 25 runs. But when he came back – with the ball still relatively hard, meaning he was passing well – he posed a whole different challenge. Bumrah's subsequent spells totaled as much as 6 for 20 in 10.5 overs. He has taken more wickets than the spinners (6 against 4). He played five times as many young girls as them (5 to 1). He even bowled more overs than the Indian opener (15.5 to 12).
Bumrah was happy that things were going in his favor but he was not getting carried away, even though he now has the best bowling average (12.80) for a seamer in India (min. five innings).
“You understand because you play three players and they will do a lot of work, but whatever your role is you have to try to make an impact,” he said. “And today was a good day. I got six wickets but that won't happen every other day. But whenever I can help the team, how can I make things difficult, what's the best way? I'm trying to look for answers. Some days it's not going to happen, that's how sport works. When the good days come, try to take advantage of them and take that confidence.”
Bumrah dismissed virtually all of England's best batters, removing numbers 3 to 6 and then dismissing numbers 9 and 10. One of those six wickets was an incredible reverse-run yorker to dismiss Ollie Pope. But it wasn't his favorite dismissal.
“Joe Root's,” he told the host broadcaster, “Because we understand that it's an important wicket in this Test match. He's a world-class batter and we know that on this wicket, getting his wicket was really important because wicket is not “
Bumrah has an excellent record against Root: eight dismissals for 245 runs in 20 innings.
India's total of 396 looked a bit light until Bumrah came back and did his thing. “Last night we felt we lost two or three more wickets than we wanted,” he said. “So we wanted to capitalize as much as possible. England also looked strong at Bumrah, but he didn't mind. “You have to be careful what you want to do because if the ball doesn't do much, you want to give the team control,” he said. “So I was just focusing on that. Yes, obviously some good balls went to fours as well, but that's OK. If I back myself and throw good balls, with the way the team plays England, you feel like you're always in. “Because if you're chasing the bowlers, if you're bowling good deliveries, there's something, the odd ball might sink and you might be in.”
The other Indian fast bowler had a bit of a tough day. Mukesh Kumar bowled seven overs and gave away 44 runs.
“It can happen to anyone because they are just starting to play international cricket,” Bumrah said. “He's just starting to play Test cricket. Obviously we have a lot of faith in him. It's a long series. You've got to rotate the players. So that's the mindset, I think. But you always learn by making mistakes. So that's how cricket is. It gives you the answer after the questions. So that's how it is. I don't consider it a bad day. It's just a day of learning. Everyone has made mistakes. Even I have made mistakes. Bumrah has played more Tests away (27) than at home (6). He was still able to produce the goods because he breaks the game down into simple questions and tries to solve them.
“I started my journey in South Africa, so I have some experience of what I have to do here.
