Bayern Munich came from a goal down to beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-1 in the Bundesliga on Saturday and stay hot on the heels of leaders Bayer Leverkusen ahead of their clash next week.

The result also set a new record for veteran Bayern attacking midfielder Thomas Müller, who notched his 500th victory in all competitions for the club, becoming the first Bayern player to achieve this record.

“A very important victory and we knew it would be difficult,” Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel said. “We had huge chances to take the lead, but we couldn't do it. Then they scored. But we showed a good reaction.

It was extremely important to win this match. We have 50 points, we showed a good reaction to the delay, so it's very positive.”

The visitors surprised Bayern by taking the lead in the 35th minute against the run of play. Muller lost possession and Gladbach launched a quick three-pass move before Nico Elvedi beat goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Bayern, who had missed numerous chances against Harry Kane and Leroy Sane, equalized just before half-time thanks to teenager Aleksandar Pavlovic who scored for the second week in a row.

The hosts' comeback was complete in the 70th minute when Kane headed in from close range after an error by the Gladbach goalkeeper.

The England captain, who became the Bundesliga's most expensive signing after joining Tottenham for a record fee of €100 million, has now scored 24 goals in Bayern's 20 league matches this season.

Matthijs de Ligt headed in the 86th minute to secure all three points, but Bayern defender Alphonso Davies left the field injured late in the match.

“Phonzy twisted his knee. We'll have to wait and see. I really have no words if it happens again,” Tuchel said in reference to Bayern's recent injuries. “Especially now that he’s getting back into shape.”
