Last October, alongside the release of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, Google announced that it was working on a new version of its AI-powered digital assistant, known as Assistant with Bard. Recent reports suggest that Google is considering simply naming it Bard, but it appears the company hasn't made a final decision yet. 9to5Google reports that the tech giant is reviewing the name of its next AI-powered digital assistant, as the most recent version of the Google app touts Gemini as a potential alternative. In the latest beta version of the Google app (version 15.4.31.29), all references to Bard – previously Assistant with Bard – have been replaced with Gemini in strings and user interfaces.

Gemini is the foundational generative AI model that Google uses to drive its various AI tools. According to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Gemini is the “best performing and most general purpose model to date, with industry-leading performance in many benchmark tests.”

Additionally, it was noted that the tech giant is renaming the paid version of Bard Advanced in the Google app to Gemini Advanced. This move seems somewhat unusual and could lead to convoluted branding.

With Gemini offered in three different sizes (Nano, Pro, Ultra), the resulting label could become cumbersome, looking something like “Gemini Advanced powered by Gemini Ultra,” as the publication points out.

Referring to a product by the name of the model behind it is somewhat atypical for a company. Nonetheless, with the launch still pending, it's time for Google to experiment with names for its next AI-powered assistant.

Until its official release, nothing is set in stone. As for the release date, recent leaks suggest that Assistant with Bard, or whatever its final name is, could be included in the next Pixel feature scheduled for March.
