Embracer Group Cancels Deus Ex Game, Layoffs Announced

Hopes are growing for a possible new entry into the Deus Ex game, but Embracer Group apparently canceled the project. On top of that, developer Eidos had to make layoffs, which affected 97 people across several departments.

In a recent report from Bloomberg“People familiar with the moves” said Embracer ended an episode of Deus Ex, which had reportedly been in development for two years.

An article on X from Eidos Montreal also indicates that nearly 100 staff members are being laid off from the company. It appears that development teams, administration, and support services will be hit the hardest.

The tweet referred to it as a “difficult decision,” adding that “the challenges in our industry and the overall restructuring announced by Embracer have ultimately impacted our studio.” The statement goes on to say that the developer will continue to be committed to “creating games that players can enjoy.”

Once again, we find ourselves talking about a seemingly endless series of layoffs that have affected those who work in video game – and video game-adjacent – ​​companies.

Embracer Group acquired a number of studios in 2022, including Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics. This has resulted in owning such huge IPs as Tomb Raider, Thief, Legacy of Kain, as well as Deus Ex.
