Until recently, artificial intelligence was more of a science fiction concept than anything accessible to everyone. Then something broke and AI tools started popping up everywhere, quickly followed by AI-based applications and new AI features in well-known software. All of this made 2023 the year when AI became mainstream and even trendy.

Today, AI is easily accessible to anyone curious enough to try it. Versions of some of the best chatbots available, like Open AI's Chat GPT and Google's Bard, are free and usable by absolutely anyone. Generating images from text inputs is relatively cheap with software like Midjourney, Stable Diffusion and DALL-E.

Meanwhile, some very popular software has gained AI-based features at no extra cost. Adobe has added Generative AI to Photoshop and Illustrator and Microsoft is integrating its Copilot in various places, including the Edge browser and GitHub.

The result is that it seems like AI is already everywhere. However, there is a feeling that we have not yet exploited the full potential of this technology. Outside of some very specific use cases, the current capabilities of all chatbots and image-generating applications look more like toys than powerful tools that will shape the future.
