Even if Galaxy AI fails to impress, Samsung is already working on expanding it،

So far, Galaxy S24 pre-orders are breaking sales records in South Korea and India.

The Galaxy S24 craze certainly has a lot to do with Samsung's Galaxy AI: the promise of magic draws people in. Soon people will have their Galaxy S24 practice and see for themselves whether the AI features are indeed as useful, fun, engaging and mind-blowing as advertised.

Let's say that in 2024, AI tricks fail to impress smartphone users. While Google, Apple and most other brands will focus on AI by the end of 2023 and thus set the course for 2024 and beyond, this is out of the question. Even if such a strange thing were to happen, phone makers would not change course and abandon the implementation of AI in their devices.

Regardless, AI is ideal for marketing purposes.

Samsung's future in AI

It was Samsung that went the extra mile in terms of AI. Instead of advertising a new flagship phone with cool AI features (much like the Pixel 8 duo), the Korean giant focused on the Galaxy AI project and introduced the Galaxy S24 as the first to offer exclusive access to Samsung's range of cool AI tricks and features. You see, if you want to enter the VIP-MVP-GOAT-AI zone, the key is Galaxy S24.

As we've pointed out, if people suddenly decided that 2024 would be the year to abandon everything AI has to offer and return to the realm of “regular smartphones”, they would be hard-pressed to get hold of a device without AI , as every other phone maker is looking for ways to incorporate artificial intelligence features in one form or another into the handset.

Some are late to the party, as usual. You know who: Apple. Even Bloomberg's Mark Gurman pointed out that Apple is “far behind” in the AI race and that it is precisely AI, not the iPhone as a standalone device, that will occupy minds in Cupertino in 2024.

A look back at the Korean giant and its future vision of AI.

For Samsung, the stakes are higher. So as not to look stupid, they to have to continue providing AI phones in the years to come. Introducing what is basically a new approach to the somewhat stagnant smartphone field in 2024 and then abandoning it in 2025 is a major no-no. The name of the game is commitment.

Congratulations to the newlyweds!

Better, smarter, faster AI with the world's fastest memory chips

Besides the fact that Samsung has locked in with AI for the coming future and there is no way back, the Koreans are doubling down. They are preparing to introduce the world's fastest GDDR7 DRAM in February 2024 (via SamMobile). It should be used for AI-centric chips, game consoles, workstations and other high-performance devices.

Samsung had confirmed in July last year that it would soon start manufacturing the new DRAM chips. Of course, this will mean faster memory chips for smartphones, allowing more AI features to be integrated into future Galaxy S devices.

GDDR stands for Graphics Double Data Rate and GDDR7 chips are expected to deliver incredibly high bandwidth, making them a crucial component for upcoming high-performance AI semiconductors. Details are scarce so far, but Samsung is expected to talk about GDDR7 at the IEEE International Semiconductor Circuits Conference in San Francisco next month.

It was previously revealed that Samsung's GDDR7 DRAM has a record bandwidth of 1.5 TB/s, a 40% increase over GDDR6. Additionally, the new chips are said to be 20% more energy efficient than GDDR6 DRAM.

Is it important ?

By now, someone might (and understandably) ask, “Okay, Samsung is making new RAM chips… So what?

Well, these potentially hyper-fast GDDR7 chips will not only make it possible to run today's tasks faster, but the new hardware will accommodate the creation of many futuristic AI apps, features, goodies, bells and whistles.

When talking about running AI-centric features, it's important to remember that they are divided into two different categories.

They can be:

For a given smartphone to be able to perform on-device AI tasks well (or not at all), it needs top-notch hardware. Some tasks, however, are so demanding that the device sends the image/video/text to the company's servers, where the magic happens. Of course, an Internet connection is required in this case. Another “sure”: sending things to certain servers for editing will give some people nightmares – mainly those who are obsessed with privacy.

Faster memory chips from Samsung will not only mean that AI tasks will be performed faster on the device, but the company's servers responsible for cloud computing will also be better and faster. It’s a win-win situation for both sides!

New hardware, new features

We are at the dawn of the “AI for the general public” phenomenon: until five minutes ago, the two-letter abbreviation was strictly reserved for high-tech scientific operators and Steven Spielberg (that's the right one moment to revisit his 2001 classic 'AI Artificial Intelligence with Jude Law and Haley Joel Osment).

Now AI can be in your pocket. It's up to phone makers to make AI features unique and distinct.

With this in mind, it is mandatory for Samsung to come up with its own AI features. For the Galaxy S24, the Korean giant relied heavily on Google's AI tricks. The Samsung/Google partnership is great, but the rivalry is also important.

Well, I really wonder what a phone would look like – not from the outside, of course – in five to ten years.
