Insider says iOS 18 ‘Crystal’ will be one of the biggest updates in Apple’s history،

Apple considers the next version of iOS – iOS 18 – to be one of the biggest updates in its history, says Bloomberg Marc Gurman.

Asked about the changes to be expected in iOS 18Gurman reiterated that AI integration, which will tie into an improved Siri, will be the headline change this year.

The next version of the iPhone operating system is codenamed Crystal, and while AI will be the focus, it won't be everything, as it's expected to “bring ambitious changes across the board.” .

Gurman did not reveal the specific features and changes coming in the latest edition of its To light up newsletterbut he told us about it in previous reports.

Apple was caught off guard when generative AI took the industry by storm and was considered a big failure within the company, even though it publicly stated that it had been working on the technology for years.

Apple is revamping Siri to implement AI in depth. Like recent phones from Samsung and Google, the new AI capabilities will improve the way Siri and the Messages app respond to queries and auto-complete sentences.

The goal is to add AI to as many services as possible, enabling features like automatic generation of audio playlists. The company is also reportedly exploring ways to help users write in Pages and automatically create slides in Keynote. We can also expect improvements to productivity apps as well as security and performance improvements.

Similar to what its competitors have done, Apple will take a combined approach, where some tasks will be handled on the device and advanced items will be offloaded to the cloud.

Google's focus on generative AI isn't the only reason Apple wants to bring the technology to the iPhone, however. Gurman previously revealed that the iPhone 16 wasn't going to be particularly exciting in terms of hardware improvement, and to make up for that, the next OS update was expected to be “extra-impressive.

iOS 18 will be announced at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in June and will likely be released in September.
