The Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max arrived with a rugged camera feat praised by many. It seems the Cupertino-based giant wants to get a head start by using a custom-made Sony sensor on the next-generation iPhone 16 Pro Max. Let's dig a little deeper to find out what it is.

To achieve advanced photography, the iPhone 16 Pro Max will come with a bespoke Sony IMX908 as well as a periscope lens along with a set of software and computing optimizations.

Sony IMX903 debuted last year and it would have been made since then if this sensor had arrived on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. However, this was not the case, and for very good reasons. Apple is known for taking its time to upgrade to newer technology, which often results in delays, but hey, it's worth it.

Coming back to the Sony IMX903, the sensor is likely to arrive on the iPhone 16 Pro Max while keeping the 48MP count intact. The sensor is slightly larger at 1/1.14″ and features dual-layer transistors, 14-bit DCG and ADC to maximize camera performance.

Other than that, the iPhone 16 Pro Max will retain the periscope telescope lens (or as Apple would call it – tetraprism) from the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The iPhone 16 Pro will reportedly get its hands on the tetraprism lens, giving customers more options to get their hands on once the iPhone 16 series arrives later this year.

We're still almost nine months away from the iPhone 16 series and the rumor mill is already full of reports. For example, the iPhone 16 Pro series is probably the first iPhone series to feature a 48MP dual camera setup as well as a 12MP telephoto lens. There is a capacitive or mechanical capture button likely to feature across the entire iPhone 16 series as well.

Subsequently, both Pro models will use the same premium Grade 5 titanium construction as the iPhone 15 Pro, maintaining their durable appearance and sleek look. We can expect a slightly curved screen on the Pro models although this remains to be confirmed.

Next, Jeff Pu and Ming-Chi Kuo anticipated the Snapdragon X75 5G plus 5G Advanced modem with a maximum download speed of 7.5 Gbps on board the iPhone 16 Pro models. Additionally, the Pro series is likely to receive 2x storage at 2TB compared to 1TB on the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Apple is pushing the boundaries of smartphone technology with the iPhone 16 Pro Max taking the benchmark position in terms of performance and camera capabilities.
