The five-minute bin could be set for an NRL return after club bosses were reportedly asked for their views on a series of issues arising during the 2023 season.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the use of the sin bin was one of the most contentious issues, with a possible overhaul on unfair acts being discussed.

NRL power players have reportedly asked officials whether the five-minute trash should be reintroduced after the club’s comments.

Sending players to the trash can for five minutes was abolished in 1991, after being abandoned due to concerns over its inconsistent implementation.

With clubs now being asked for their views on the matter, the NRL and ARLC are reportedly seriously considering using the five-minute bin in 2024.

Club officials were also reportedly asked whether players sent to prison for 10 minutes should be replaced via an available exchange.

This would prevent clubs who have used all their substitutions from replacing the player sent off for foul play.

As it stands, NRL power players are gathering feedback, but former NRL referee Gavin Badger has criticized the proposal.

“In today’s match, five minutes is two sets, for the benefit you can get from a professional foul, I don’t think that’s a big enough deterrent,” Badger told SEN 1170.

“I know teams will manipulate this as much as they can in certain areas.”

He also explained that the fact that teams are without a player for a short period of time is not really a disadvantage given the pace of the current match.

“With sin bin becoming more consistent, teams are doing a lot of work on defense with 12 players, only to have to do it for two sets,” Badger explained.

“And generally, looking at professional fouls that are try situations, you’re more than willing to give it up if it means you save your team a try.

“We saw this when the ‘six again’ first came around, particularly when teams were defending out of the ‘red zone’ when teams were going off the field.

“They were more likely to give one away because it only meant one more tackle. “I think we’ll be in a similar situation, I don’t think the game needs any further changes.”
