Anthony Martial will hold talks with Manchester United's medical department before deciding whether to undergo surgery to correct a hip injury, a source has told ESPN.

Martial has recovered from the illness that initially sidelined him in December, but he now has to deal with a hip problem that is preventing him from joining Erik ten Hag's side.

The France international is following an individual training program in the hope the injury will subside, but the 28-year-old, along with United's medical team, may decide an operation is the best course of action. Martial has not played since the 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth at Old Trafford on December 9.

Erik ten Hag's side are currently on winter break with their next match scheduled for January 28, when they travel to Newport County in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Reports of a rift between Martial and Ten Hag have been dismissed by both the player's camp and the club, but the former Monegasque's future remains up in the air.

United have decided not to extend Martial's contract by another year and he is expected to leave as a free agent this summer. The club were prepared to listen to offers during the January transfer window, but are likely to see out the second half of the season at Old Trafford.

A source told ESPN that, despite reports, United have received no contact from Turkish side Fenerbahce about a deal in January.

Martial has scored two goals in 19 games this season and 90 in 317 appearances since leaving Monaco in 2015.

United's injury problems eased with Lisandro Martínez and Casemiro returning to the team for the 2-2 win over Tottenham.

Mason Mount and Harry Maguire are still out but Luke Shaw, who has missed the last four games, should be fit to return against Newport.
