iPhone 16 models are on their way to receiving an all-new “capture button,” but what is it, you may ask? Well, we're about to find out exactly what it can do. According to the latest update coming from The Information, one of the (many) functions the capture button could bring is to respond to pressure to zoom in and out of a frame.

This means you can use the Capture button to zoom in and out by swiping left or right. It can respond to hard pressure to activate recording as well as focus to light pressure. The report also states that the capture button is likely mechanical and not capacitive as previously thought, although this should be taken with a pinch of salt. If true, the capture button will look like the action button we saw with the iPhone 15 Pros.

We got a glimpse of a so-called “capture button” in September last year and it's been making news ever since. In December, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said the button could help take video, although more information is awaited.

With the recent reveal in mind, you know the exact function (probably one of many) that the capture button could serve. It's likely located on the right side of iPhone 16 models, below the power button. This would make it extremely accessible to your fingers when holding the phone in a horizontal orientation and the same goes for landscape orientation, very similar to DSLR cameras.

Why horizontal, you ask? YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, TikTok Videos, Snapchat, etc. are all recorded in portrait or horizontal mode, which means having a feature as such in this orientation which helps Apple trigger positive reviews and more takers. It’s like a win-win situation for everyone.

The iPhone 16 series is still a long way off and is only expected to arrive in September this year. The series is unlikely to bring a tectonic shift in terms of design, except for a larger screen and a powerful chipset (at least on the Pro). Watch this space as we find out more about the iPhone 16 series and beyond.
