A serious storage bug is affecting some Pixel 6 series units on Android 14،

The Pixel 8 series and Android 14 just made their official debut a few weeks ago, introducing cutting-edge features to Android users. However, while the combination of Google’s latest smartphone and Android OS release enjoys mostly positive reviews, that’s not quite the case for those holding onto older hardware.

This is the case for several owners of Google’s two-year-old Pixel 6 series smartphones who recently upgraded to the stable version of Android 14. A quick look at the GooglePixel subreddit and Pixel Phone help community reveals what appears to be a very serious storage bug on these devices.

According to user reports, upon receipt of the Android 14 update, access to files on the device is no longer possible. It appears that the device’s internal storage has suddenly dropped significantly (from 128 GB to 4 GB in one case) and is showing a “Download Failed” or “Device out of storage” error every time a user tries to take a photo, access a file or install and uninstall applications. For some users, even trying to open the storage section in the device settings causes the device to crash.

Attempts to contact Google Support for help with the above issues have not yielded useful results, with most representatives suggesting solutions such as restarting the phone in safe mode, erasing the device or, in some cases, finding warranty replacement options. Naturally, this angered affected users.

A common denominator in all of these cases appears to be the existence of multiple accounts on the affected device. In some cases, storage issues only appear on one profile, but no issues appear on the second.
Google has not yet acknowledged the problem, but hopefully they are aware of it and are already working on a bug fix. Things like this have happened before with software updates and older Pixel devices, and they’re usually resolved within a few days. Hopefully those affected Pixel 6 series users can get resolution as soon as possible.
