Samsung Galaxy S24 vs Galaxy S23: What’s new?،

Introduction

Samsung has just officially unveiled its new compact powerhouse, the Galaxy S24so this is the perfect opportunity to review the new features and compare them to the previous Galaxy S23.

What's new and what's changed? And is it worth upgrading?

It all starts with a slightly tweaked design, a slightly larger screen, a faster chip, and even long-awaited camera improvements.

Galaxy S24 against Galaxy S23 specification differences:

Design and size

Square design and very slightly larger size

With a triple camera setup on the back, the Galaxy S24 looks a lot like Galaxy S23but look closer and you'll notice some changes.

The big difference surely lies in flat sides on the new Galaxy S24which makes it feel like an iPhone.

Although the screen size is now slightly larger, the physical size of the phone has changed so slightly that you won't notice it, so it's still a fairly compact option.

Both phones also feature an aluminum frame, but you now get a tougher Armor Aluminum frame on the S24 and the finish is matte instead of glossy. Closer inspection also shows that the gap between the back panel and the frame is virtually transparent on the newer phone.

The rest remained the same between the S24 and S23: both have an IP68 rating and both come with a USB-C port on the bottom.

  • Black Onyx
  • Marbled gray
  • Cobalt Violet
  • Amber Yellow
One thing that hasn't changed is the packaging: the The Galaxy S24 is coming in a slim box without a charger and there is only a USB-C cable included in the box.

Display differences

The exact size of the display on the Galaxy S24 measures 6.17 inches (often rounded to 6.2 inches), while the S23 had a 6.1 inch screen.

The resolution remains the same at 1080p. It doesn't bother us. Yes, it's a bit lower than the 1440p displays on the S24 Plus and Ultra models, but the difference is so tiny that most people won't even notice it.

Maximum brightness increases to 2,600 nits, however, compared to 1,750 nits on the S23, so the new Galaxy is much easier to use outdoors.

The S24 is also the first flagship in the vanilla Galaxy S series to support an adaptive refresh rate from 1Hz to 120Hz. Galaxy S23 could only go between 48Hz and 120Hz, so this newer model will be more economical in terms of power consumption thanks to support for 1Hz with static content.

As for biometrics, nothing new. THE Galaxy S24 relies above all on an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner integrated into the screen, just like the Galaxy S23and it also supports image-based facial recognition (which is a bit less secure).

Performance and software

All about Galaxy AI

THE Galaxy S24 comes with a new, faster chipset, but the focus has clearly shifted to something else this year: Galaxy AI, which is integrated all around the new Samsung One UI 6.1 software!

A number of key applications now feature AI. The native Phone app now supports real-time translation of phone calls. It uses on-device AI, so your privacy is also protected.

The Samsung keyboard also benefits from the new Chat Assist feature, where with just the press of a button you can translate messages and you will also see suggestions for tweaking the tone of your texts.

During meetings or when recording voice memos, Transcript Assist will provide a summary and even translations if necessary.

Samsung is also partnering with Google. The new Circle to Search with Google is as simple as it looks, making it easy to search for anything.

At the same time, it is not yet clear whether the Galaxy S23 and older models could benefit from these AI features, or whether they will rely too much on the new Snapdragon chip in the S24 models.

Speaking of processors, we have the Snapdragon 8 generation 3 processor (at least in the US), a beastly chip with improved power and efficiency. You also benefit from the same 8 GB of RAM (same LPDDR5X type as on the S23). This is a bit disappointing, considering the One UI's high RAM requirements.

You have two storage options, as before: a base 8/128 GB model and an 8/256 GB version as well.

Very impressively, the The Galaxy S24 comes with SEVEN years of OS upgrades and security patches, a big step up from the 4 years of software support (for major updates) on the market . Galaxy S23.

Camera

Same hardware, but more realistic colors and better overall photos

The cameras on the Galaxy S24 look exactly like those on the S23, which means you get three separate raised camera lenses with the following features:

  • 50MP main, f/1.8
  • 10MP 3X zoom, f/2.4
  • 12MP ultra-wide, f/2.2
  • 12MP front camera

This looks like the same 50MP ISOCELL GN3 main camera sensor that Samsung has used in recent years. But even if the camera hardware remains the same, Samsung would significantly improve image processing, thanks to this magical new “Galaxy AI”.

The big change is only in the colors of the images. Gone are the bright, saturated colors we're used to seeing on Galaxy phones, and you have more natural colors. Over-sharpening was also a big problem on previous models and has been significantly alleviated on the S24.

We'll upload sample photos of both phones soon so you can see the differences. Stay tuned for that.

Audio and haptic quality

One area that hasn't changed much is the audio system or haptics as well.

THE Galaxy S23 the sound quality was good, but not quite the best on the market. The speakers sound a bit “thin” for a flagship phone, with less bass tones than one would like to hear, and the situation remained virtually identical on the S24.

Battery life and charging

Slightly larger battery, same charging speeds
With the slightly larger overall size of the phone, the Galaxy S24 gets a modest battery size upgrade to 4,000mAh, up from 3,900mAh on the Galaxy S23.

That's a change of 2.5%, not enough to really make a difference.

New Snapdragon 8 generation 3 However, the chip could do it, so we won't rush to judgment on battery life.

What certainly remains the same are the charging speeds. Using a cable, you can reach a maximum power of 25W for charging, while wireless charging works at 15W. There is no support for the wireless charging standard Qi2 on the Galaxy S24.

Samsung simply refuses to add faster charging to this smaller model, and if you want truly fast charging rates, you still have to import a phone from Chinese brands like Xiaomi, Oppo, or Huawei.

Specification Comparison

Check out the main differences between the two in the table below:

Summary

If we just look at the specifications and exterior design, the Galaxy S24 This looks like an incremental update, but given the new, faster chip and especially the new Galaxy AI features, these improvements are starting to add up.

It remains to be seen whether AI will make a big difference in Galaxy S24 real-world experience, but AI is definitely the hidden ace up Samsung's sleeve.

Are you excited about all these new features of the Galaxy S24? And which one do you think will make the biggest difference in real life?
