Galaxy S24 Plus vs Galaxy S23 Plus: The era of AI is upon us،

Samsung claims to have succeeded in reducing the frames of the Galaxy S24 Plus and this is the main reason for the larger display. The S24 Plus comes with a 6.7-inch display, while its predecessor, the Galaxy S23 Plus sports a 6.6-inch panel. Even though the edges may be a millimeter or two, the truth is that the S24 Plus is significantly larger and heavier than its predecessor.

How much bigger and heavier could you ask? The S24 Plus measures 162.3 x 79 x 8.6 mm and 233 grams, while the previous model is more compact at 157.8 x 76.2 x 7.6 mm and 196 grams. That's not the only design difference.

  • Lavender
  • Green
  • Phantom Black

Galaxy S24 Plus expected colors:

  • Cobalt Violet
  • Amber yellow
  • Marbled gray
  • Onyx black
  • Jade Green (Samsung.com exclusive)
  • Sapphire Blue (Samsung.com exclusive)
  • Sandstone Orange (Samsung.com exclusive)

Now let's talk a little about screens. They are different, not only in size but also in technology. THE Galaxy S23 Plus features older LTPO technology that allows the screen to dynamically switch between 10 and 120 Hz, while the newer model can go down to 1 Hz. Galaxy S24 Plus is also much brighter, according to Samsung it can go up to 2,600 nits of peak brightness, but we need to test that to give you a more quantitative comparison. Stay tuned for our in-depth display tests.

To summarize, if you opt for the Galaxy S23+, you get a device that is a little more compact but also lighter. On the other hand, if you decide to buy the newer model, you get more screen real estate, a better dynamic refresh rate, and a brighter display.

Performance and software

A typical generational leap
THE Galaxy S24 Plus comes with the latest Qualcomm chipset onboard, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, while last year's Galaxy S23 Plus introduces the previous version of this chipset, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. We have to do some testing on the new model, but you should expect the usual generation jump between Qualcomm's flagship silicon. That being said, no night and day difference in actual performance as usual.
The RAM situation is in favor of Galaxy S24 Plus as the base model comes with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, while the older Galaxy S23 Plus starts with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of built-in memory. None of these phones have a microSD card expansion slot.

Coming to the software features, the new model comes with in-device AI, which seems to be the latest trend in the industry. Galaxy AI can do a lot of cool things, like translate your phone calls and messages in real time, transcribe notes and memos, help you create chat messages, and much more. It is unclear whether or not these features will carry over to the Galaxy S23 Plus in the future, but given that some of them are integrated into the hardware of the Galaxy S24 Plusthe latter has an advantage.

Samsung offers four years of major software updates with an additional year of security patches for the S23 Plus, but the Galaxy S24 Plus extends support to a total of seven years. That's right, seven years of major OS updates, just like the Pixel 8. The phone will launch with Android 14 onboard with OneUI 6.1 on top, and will outlast the S23 Plus by four years, as far as concerns major operating system updates.

Camera

Same but with added AI

The camera situation hasn't changed much when it comes to pure hardware. THE Galaxy S24 Plus retains the same configuration as its predecessor. Here's a full look at the camera systems on both phones:

  • 12MP F2.2 ultra-wide camera, 120˚ FOV
  • 50MP OIS F1.8 wide camera, 85˚ FOV
  • 10MP telephoto camera, 3x optical zoom, F2.4, 36˚ FOV
  • 12MP F2.2 front camera, 80˚ field of view

What's interesting is that Samsung has refined the color correction algorithms and now the Galaxy S24 Plus should produce more natural photos. There are other software improvements, such as a more precise image stabilization algorithm, allowing for better night photos and videos, a host of professional photo editing tools, generative editing (AI does this for you), and much more.

We do not know whether or not these features will be available on the Galaxy S23 after a future update, and we also can't say at the moment if they really make a difference. We're running a few sample comparisons as we write this, so stay tuned for the first head-to-head images shortly.

Audio and haptic quality

There are no major changes in audio and haptics; hence the Galaxy S24 Plus and its predecessor share the same speakers and haptic motors. There's a slight chance that the S24 Plus will feel a bit more powerful thanks to its larger size, but it probably won't be noticeable.

Battery life and charging

A bigger body means a bigger battery!

THE Galaxy S23 Plus comes with a 4,700mAh battery and supports 45W wired charging speeds. It The Galaxy S24 Plus, on the other hand, improves the capacity to 4,900 mAh and retains the charging speeds of the previous model. We don't know what impact the 200mAh difference would have on battery life, and to make things even more complicated, the Snapdragon 8 generation 3 is still a big unknown in terms of effectiveness. It's probably safe to say that both Galaxy S23 Plus and the Galaxy S24 Plus could have similar endurance. We have to wait until our battery and charging tests are complete, so stay tuned for some hard numbers in this section soon.

Summary and final verdict

So which one should you get? The answer is, again, “it depends.” If you already have a Galaxy S23 Plus, incremental improvements in screen brightness and silicon power aren't enough for a Switch. AI magic could arrive with a potential software update on the Galaxy S23 Plusalso, so you just have to wait.

If you're coming from an older Galaxy or other Android phone, things might be a little more difficult. Samsung has some very aggressive trade-in deals, especially at launch, so this could be a great opportunity to get a new phone, and why not get the newest one, right? THE Galaxy S24 Plus offers a large and bright screen, the latest Snapdragon and some integrated AI software.
