South Sydney assistant coach John Sutton has sent a warning to Rabbitohs players and revealed the next wave of stars coming through the famous club.

Jason Demetriou’s side shockingly missed the finals in 2023, with their fate sealed after a final round defeat to the Roosters.

Assistant coaches Sam Burgess and John Morris have both already left the club, with Sutton, the Rabbitohs’ longest-serving player, promoted to the role.

He joins Ben Hornby and NSW Cup-winning coach Joe O’Callaghan in Demetriou’s squad ahead of the 2024 season, ready to spark change at Redfern.

“Simply put, there are no excuses next season,” Sutton told the Daily Telegraph.

“There is nothing like hard work and we will work hard from day one of pre-season to be ready for the new year.

“Just being able to work with freshmen now and being more involved is something I’m really looking forward to.”

“I’m looking forward to doing a lot of work for the younger players on the team, which I love doing.”

The Rabbitohs will welcome high-profile recruit Jack Wighton to the club in 2024, with Sutton revealing he will likely feature in the centres.

This means that Isaiah Tass will be ousted from his position, with a tougher battle for the right-wing position.

Tass, alongside Taane Milne and Izack Thompson will compete for the winger position, but Sutton believes Tyrone Munro is a player to watch.

“The sky is the limit for Tyrone Munro, he can be anything,” Sutton said.

He also believes Tallis Duncan, Jye Gray, Ben Lovett and Thomas Fletcher will all “put pressure” on the freshmen, hoping to take their place next year.
