Portal 64 Creator Responds to Takedown: ‘Don’t Be Mad at Valve’،

Recently, interest has begun to increase regarding the progress of a Portal fan remake called Portal 64. Unfortunately, Valve stepped in to stop it. The creator has since responded, explaining what happened and why we shouldn't be mad at the game's original developer.

Avoid disputes

In a recent YouTube video, James Lambert discussed the withdrawal of his Portal 64 project. He said he was contacted by someone at Valve, and when it turned out that this unofficial remake was using Nintendo assets, the The company's legal team requested that development be halted.

Lambert is calm and understanding in the video, saying he doesn't blame Valve for asking him to scrap the project. The game – which would have seen the first Portal installment recreated for the N64 – used assets from Nintendo's library, Libultra.

It seemed clear to Lambert that Valve simply did not want to engage in legal dispute with Nintendo. As such, putting a “stamp of approval” on something that uses Libultra would likely result in litigation, something both Half-Life and Left 4 Dead studios would like to avoid.

However, he clarified that he doesn't blame Valve for wanting Portal 64 removed, adding: “I don't think you should do it.” [be mad]so be it.” Lambert goes on to say that he expected the project to have problems anyway, so it doesn't really seem like a surprise to him.

Unfortunately, this means there won't be an N64 version. Portal, with little chance of relaunching it. Which is a shame because it has been in development for two years. However, Lambert said he wanted to pursue an original game instead.
