Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has been effectively powering flagship smartphones for a year. Now, Qualcomm is ready to take the next step forward. The chipmaker will obviously launch a new chipset for flagship devices in 2024 and this new chipset will be Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The chipset is rumored to have a model number SM8650.

Qualcomm will announce the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset at its Tech Summit 2023, scheduled for October 24-26. The newest chipset will be launched on the first day of the summit.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset: What’s new

Although Qualcomm has kept details of its next-generation flagship processor under lock and key, various reports have hinted at what we can expect.

  • Qualcomm will drop 32-bit support and offer 64-bit support only for Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
  • Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will use Arm’s latest Cortex-X4, A720 and A520 processors, 64-bit only, so they will power the SoC.
  • AI will play an important role in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset.
  • Connectivity options will improve and diversify with this new chipset. Support for Wi-Fi 7, a new Snapdragon
  • Tipster Digital Chat Station announced that Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 received a score of 2 million points. It scored 840,000 points in the GPU test and uses a new Adreno 750 GPU.
  • The chipset will come with LPDDR5T RAM which is newer and faster than LPDDR5X.
  • It is reported that Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will feature 2 variants: 3nm architecture and 4nm architecture.

Expected smartphones with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset

1. Xiaomi 14 Series

The Xiaomi 13 series was powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and continued the trend Xiaomi 14 Series will be the first to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. The series is expected to launch on October 27 in India and will be a premium offering from the brand.

Xiaomi 14 is expected to flaunt an AMOLED display with 2K resolution and 144Hz refresh rate. It is said to have a titanium frame and satellite connectivity in case of emergency. The smartphone will pack a 5,000mAh battery with 120W wired fast charging and 50W wireless charging. In terms of camera optics, there could be a 50MP triple lens setup on the back. The series is said to include 2 models – Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro and the price is expected to start around 50,000.

The Xiaomi 14 series is expected to go on sale in India from October 31.

2.OnePlus12

OnePlus’ next flagship will also be powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The launch is expected to take place in China in November. Leaked renderings suggest that the design of the OnePlus 12 will be similar to its predecessor. There will be 50 MP primary, 50 MP ultra-wide, and 64 MP telephoto lenses on the back. On the front will be a 32 MP selfie camera.

OnePlus 12 is expected to have a 6.7-inch AMOLED panel with 2K resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. It will be an LTPO panel. There will reportedly be 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage along with a 5,400mAh battery under the hood. When it comes to charging, the OnePlus 12 could come with 100W wired and 50W wireless charging capability.

3. iQOO 12 Series

iQOO 12 Series will also be among the first to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. It will include the iQOO 12 and iQOO 12 Pro smartphones and could be announced in November for the Chinese market. Some reports claim that iqoo will launch the series in the same month in India.

The iQOO 12 smartphone is expected to have a 6.78-inch AMOLED E7 panel with a 144Hz refresh rate and 2K resolution. There will also be HDR10+ and PWM 1440 Hz dimming. Besides the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, there would be 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage on board. In terms of camera, the iQOO 12 could be equipped with 50 MP main, 50 MP ultra-wide, and OIS-enabled 64 MP telephoto lenses on the rear. On the front will be a 16MP lens. Under the hood will be a 5,000mAh battery with 200W wired fast charging. It will run FunTouchOS 14 based on Android 14 out of the box.

4. Realme GT 5 Pro

Realme’s first SoC with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 would be Realme GT 5 Pro. The smartphone is expected to be powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with 24GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. There would be a 2K display, a 1/1.4x Sony IMX9 primary sensor with OIS, and a 64 MP OmniVision PV64B periscope lens with 3x optical zoom. GT 5 Pro is said to support 100W wired fast charging and 50W wireless charging. The battery capacity is not yet known.

5. Oppo Find X7 Series

THE Oppo Find X7 Series will include the Find X7 and Find X7 Pro smartphones. It is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2024 and be powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The devices are said to feature a Samsung E6 2K LTPO display with 2,500 nits brightness. In terms of camera, there will be a 32 MP selfie lens on the front and a triple camera setup on the rear. The rear camera will feature a 50 MP primary shooter, an IMX890 ultra-wide sensor, and an IMX890 periscope lens.

6. Samsung Galaxy S24 Series

THE Samsung Galaxy S24 series will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset for some regions. The series will launch in January 2024 and will include 3 devices: Samsung Galaxy S24, Samsung Galaxy S24+ and Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. In some regions, the series is said to be powered by the Exynos 2400 chipset. The Galaxy S24 series is also expected to have titanium in its body and the Ultra model will have a 200 MP primary camera sensor like the S23 Ultra. Battery capacities should also improve this time, as well as charging speeds.

7. Honor the Magic 6 series

The next series of Honor, the Honor the Magic 6 series is also expected to be powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The series will include the Honor Magic 6, Honor Magic 6 Pro, and Honor Magic 6 Ultimate smartphones. The series will run MagicOS 8.0 based on Android 14 and will have dynamic island-like functionality for the Pro and Ultimate models. The Ultimate model is expected to feature a 200 MP camera setup. It is unclear whether the series will come to India or not.

8. Meizu 21 Series

Meizu 21 Series the smartphones will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 series. The devices are said to have a vertical camera stack and an RGB ring LED flash. The launch is expected to take place in the first quarter of 2024. Along with a vertical camera stack, there will be a 50 MP main camera with optical image stabilization as well as a periscope telephoto lens.

9. Red Magic Series 9

The Red Magic 9 series is designed for gamers. The Red Magic 9 series is expected to debut in December 2023 or January 2024. The devices will be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC with 12GB of RAM. The Red Magic 9 series will run Android 14 operating system out of the box, as confirmed by the device’s Geekbench listing.

The Vivo X100, Oppo Find N3 and Redmi K70 series are also expected to be powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
