Bayern wanted to sign Radu Drăgușin and tabled an offer to rival that of Spurs for a total fee of around €30 million, but the Genoa defender opted to move to north London, forcing the Bundesliga club to look for alternative options.

Dier is out of contract at Tottenham this summer and has been deemed surplus to requirements by head coach Ange Postecoglou.

Despite the absence of central defenders Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero for long periods this season, Postecoglou has preferred to use full-backs Ben Davies and Emerson Royal at the heart of his defence.

As a result, Dier has only started one game this season – 2-1 loss to Wolves in November – and has made just four appearances in all competitions.

Davies was injured during Spurs' 1-0 FA Cup third round win over Burnley last Friday and when asked if the club could still afford to lose Dier this month, Postecoglou replied : “Yes.

West Ham were among several other clubs monitoring Dier, but terms were quickly agreed with Bayern once they made their interest official.

Dier joined Spurs from Sporting Lisbon in August 2014 for £4 million and made a total of 365 appearances for the club. He was also capped 49 times by England.

Dier will join former Spurs teammate Harry Kane at the Allianz Arena after making the same move to Munich last summer.
