Samsung’s prototype revealed: Galaxy Buds case with OLED display. Yay or nay?،

Remember that Oprah episode where the entire studio audience – almost 300 people – received a brand new Pontiac G6 car (and some almost had a heart attack)? This happened 20 years ago and not everyone was happy the next day because of something called the “gift tax”, but that's another story.

However, a certain refrain was born that day and is now considered meme material. It was Oprah, shouting frantically into the microphone:

You get a car… you get a car… and you get a car!

Samsung should hire Oprah to re-enact this same moment, but instead of a live audience, they should place various devices in front of her – phones, tablets, smartwatches, headphones:

You get a display… you get a display… and you get a display!

For the Korean giant, it is not enough that the Flip and Fold phones in the Galaxy Z range have external screens. No, they want to go the extra mile and add an OLED display to… the Galaxy earbuds case.

There is another one…

Truth be told, there is another earphone case with a screen that you may have stumbled upon. These are a model of JBL headphones (the JBL Tour Pro 2, to be precise) and the screen on the case is rectangular. This makes it look like an iPod from an alternate universe.

The new thing from Samsung

Back to Samsung and its latest cool device. The Asian giant showed off many new types of OLED displays at the ongoing CES 2024 exhibition: brighter TV and monitor screens, thinner laptop screens, foldable dual screens for phones, curved and rollable screens for cars, and even OLED touchscreens for wireless headphones (via SamMobile). It's only a prototype, but it looks really cool with the circular OLED panel – is this what the Galaxy Watch aftermarket screens are made into?

It's called “Earbuds OLED Case” and the screen is fully functional: it can show things like the battery level of the earbuds and case, it can show audio modes and ANC status (delete active noise). Potentially, many settings could be adjusted and set directly from the case rather than opening the earbuds app on a paired phone. Users can also switch to another device directly from the earphone case screen.

There is a short, but very informative video from Lisa Eadicicco, editor-in-chief of CNET it's on YouTube and shows the OLED earphone case in all its glory:

So, are you hooked? Do you want to have a display on your earphone case…or are you worried that this item is fragile and will crack quickly?
