Former No.3 pick Paddy Dow will get his second AFL chance, and perhaps the best of his career, at St Kilda after a four-club deal to allow his exit from Carlton emerged on Tuesday .

Although the league has yet to officially confirm the deal as of Tuesday night, Dow is believed to have been traded to the Saints, with the Blues gaining future picks in return, roughly equivalent to the value of pick 49.

The midfielder has had a rollercoaster career at Princes Park, unable to live up to his draft third-choice bill of the 2017 crop – ahead of the likes of Luke Davies-Uniacke, Adam Cerra and Aaron Naughton – but leaving fans ask the club why he was not given bigger opportunities in the latter stages of his career.

Playing 10 matches in 2023 after injuries saw him find a place in the senior team, Dow enjoyed one of the best runs of his career before the final, including 24 disposals and seven clearances in the final victory against Gold Coast.

“He was a favorite of a lot of Carlton fans and they desperately wanted him to get that opportunity,” commentator Anthony Hudson said on Fox Footy’s Trading Day.

“The very good teams in the competition – St Kilda have improved throughout the year, but a lot of them have around eight to 10 (players) who can rotate effectively within their midfield. So that adds a bit to what St Kilda and Ross Lyon are looking for.

“He may have to pay a little outside and work his way on board to take over from Crouch and Steele when they need to rest during the competition, that’s how I see his role playing out. play.”
