Sonic the Hedgehog Becomes a McDonald’s Happy Meal in the UK

Next to Super Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog is one of video gaming's most recognizable mascots, and now he's back in a new McDonald's promotion. In the UK, the “blue blur” is getting the Happy Meal treatment, featuring collectible figures from the long-running franchise.

The promotion is live now and runs until February 6. McDonald's website announces the return of Sonic the Hedgehog as a Happy Meal, with a television ad campaign (embedded below) to sell the marriage of video game characters and fast food.

As for the content of the promotion, there is the possibility of collecting 12 characters, including Tails, Amy, Knuckles and, of course, Sonic. These “themed toys” also include “hoverboards, stacking towers, puzzles and mosaic posters.”

The meal itself features a QR code that, when scanned, can “unlock the sonic speed booster” and allow you (or your kids, if you prefer) to “zoom into a digital adventure” with the cast of Sonic .

At the moment it appears the promotion is limited to McDonald's restaurants in the UK. At the time of publishing this article, it is unknown if a similar Sonic-themed Happy Meal marketing campaign will take place in other countries.

As its stock has fallen over the years, Sonic the Hedgehog continues to appear in a multitude of new adventures. Older fans may agree that his glory days are behind him, but the likes of 2017's Sonic Mania show that he still has life left in him.

In any case, whether his games are good or bad, the fact that he came back as a meal at McDonald's shows that he's not quite ready to be put out to pasture just yet.
