Apple’s environmental efforts criticized and praised (somewhat) by a new report،

Apple has placed emphasis on the environment and its protection in recent years. However, the company’s environmental claims have come under scrutiny. Now, a new report claims that Apple is exaggerating its environmental achievements, but at the same time, the report also acknowledges that Cupertino is far ahead of its rivals on the matter, reports 9to5Mac.

Apple’s environmental claims put under the microscope by a new report: not enough but better than others

Initially, Greenpeace criticized Apple for encouraging rapid product turnover, which, naturally, comes at a high environmental cost. The organization claimed that Apple encouraged people to upgrade to the latest iPhone, even with minor changes, instead of encouraging extended use of the device and extending the time between major releases. The new report we’re talking about here today comes from Stand.earth, another environmental organization. The report acknowledges that Apple’s claims about its contribution to environmental protection are exaggerated, but Cupertino is also doing more than other tech companies on this issue.

The companies compared by the organization are Apple, Dell, Google, HP, Microsoft and Nvidia. All of these companies (except Nvidia) have committed to reducing absolute global greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, but Apple is ahead of the rest in this regard.

An interesting aspect of the criticism though: the report emphasizes the word “absolute” because some companies rely on unbundled renewable energy certificates to claim carbon neutrality, which could potentially mask actual carbon emissions and dependency to fossil fuels for energy. However, Apple has also received praise, including that it is ahead of other tech giants in meeting its goals. Additionally, Apple also provides support to its suppliers and assistance regarding these commitments. It is meant to provide financial support, knowledge transfer and incentives to help with the energy transition.
