Australian Olympic track cyclist and former world champion Melissa Hoskins has died in a car crash in the south of the country, the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) announced on Monday. She was 32 years old.

Australian media widely reported that Hoskins' husband and two-time world individual time trial champion, Rohan Dennis, had been arrested and charged over her death.

“The AOC has expressed its deepest sadness at the loss of Olympic cyclist Melissa Hoskins following the tragic events in Adelaide,” it said in a message posted to social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

“Our condolences go out to Melissa’s family, friends and cycling community at this extremely difficult time.”

Hoskins won gold in the team pursuit at the 2015 World Championships and was a member of the Australian team at the London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Olympics.

A South Australian State Police statement released on Sunday said a 32-year-old woman died in hospital after being hit by a car in a northern suburb of Australia's capital Adelaide -Southern.

Police said a 33-year-old man was arrested and charged with causing death by dangerous driving, careless driving and endangering life. The driver was known to the woman and was released on bail to appear in court on March 13, police said.

A police spokesperson said they were not confirming the names of the victims or defendants involved in the incident.
