WhatsApp’s Web Client To Receive Status Update, Dark Mode, And Usernames Soon،

WhatsApp, the instant messaging platform owned by Meta, continues to release updates regularly. Most recently, it introduced the View Once privacy setting for voice messages, as well as passcodes that help users protect sensitive chats. While these upgrades have already made their way to the Android and iOS versions of the platform, WhatsApp is now working to improve the web version.

WhatsApp Web Feature Rolling Out: Status Updates

Over the past week, WhatsApp update tracker WABetaInfo has released several updates related to WhatsApp's web client. On December 26, 2023, the service extended its status update functionality to its web version. Once this feature becomes available to everyone, web users should be able to share photos, videos and text updates directly as status from their desktop or laptop.

WhatsApp Web Feature in Development: Dark Mode for Web

On December 27, 2023, WABetaInfo reported how WhatsApp is working on a new dark mode for its web client. It is essentially a darker background color that is less strain on the eyes and allows users to use the web version in poorly lit environments. According to the report, the new dark mode is currently under development. Therefore, it is not available to many beta testers at the moment.

The publication writes in its report that the move from “#111b20 to $12181c will introduce a subtle but impactful change, making the interface more visually pleasing and reducing eye strain.” It's important to mention that WhatsApp already has excellent dark modes for Android and iOS devices.

Users will soon be able to create usernames on WhatsApp for the web

The messaging service is also working on the Create Username feature. Once deployed, users can create usernames directly from the web version of the application without disclosing their phone numbers. The username creation process should be similar to another Meta-owned platform like Instagram, where usernames function as unique identifiers. In the screenshot shared by the post, we can see a “Your username” option just below the “Your name” option.

The post also notes that users will be able to change their username at any time. Along with this feature, the platform is also working to allow users to search for other people with their username. In the screenshot shared with this report, we can see the text prompt reading “Search for name, number or @username” in the WhatsApp search box. However, these features are also under development.
