Samsung’s new AI Live Translate will work on calls between Galaxy and non-Galaxy phones

Samsung has already announced that the next Galaxy S24 The flagship line will contain AI features and one of them is the Live Translate Call feature. According to Nikkei Asia, the feature, which will work with voice calls on the phone, will debut with support for English and Spanish before adding other languages ​​such as Korean and Japanese. This feature will allow two people speaking different languages ​​to participate in a telephone conversation, with the words spoken by each caller translated into the other's language in real time.

Nikkei Asia has discovered that the new feature will work even if a person with a Galaxy S24 series device is on a call with someone using a phone made by another company. This means that if you own a Galaxy S24 Ultra for example, you can talk to someone who not only speaks a different language, but also uses an iPhone or Pixel or any other non-Samsung brand. Both parties will hear the conversation translated in real time in their ears. The translation can also appear as text on a phone screen.

Of course, Samsung could have locked this down so that the Live Translate Call feature only worked on calls made between two Galaxy device owners, but instead it chose to allow calls between one Galaxy S24 series handset and another phone to benefit from what is truly an AI feature that makes the world a smaller place.

Translations will occur without lag compared to previous iterations of call-based translation applications that relied on the cloud, causing slight delays between hearing the words spoken and receiving the translation. More powerful chips can allow conversations to be translated instantly on the device. Samsung first announced its AI-powered Live Translate Call feature in November. It will use Samsung's Gauss generative AI model and the company's proprietary processors to deliver the translations on the device.

In addition to having live translation features available on the Galaxy S24 series, recent speculation has claimed that the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro will offer the same real-time language translation functionality, but will also allow translation of face-to-face conversations. The Galaxy Buds 3 Pro is expected to be released in the second half of next year. The Live Translate Call feature will work on the earphones even when there is no internet connection.
