Samsung Wallet, the app that allows users to store and manage their cards, tickets and coupons on their Samsung Galaxy smartphones, has added a new feature: mobile driver's licenses and state IDs. The company announced in October that it would bring the feature to Arizona and Iowa. However, other than “later this year”, no specific date has been given as to when exactly it will go live.

Now, it appears the wait is over as the feature is available in Arizona, according to the announcement made by the Arizona Department of Transportation. Samsung Wallet users residing in Arizona can now store a digital version of their physical cards on their phone and use them in locations that accept digital IDs, such as TSA checkpoints at certain airports.

This feature provides more convenience and security to users as they do not need to carry their physical cards with them and risk losing or damaging them. Digital credentials are also encrypted and protected by fingerprint or PIN authentication, so only the authorized user can access them.

To add a mobile driver's license or state ID to Samsung Wallet, users simply need to open the app, go to the Quick Access tab and click the “+” button. From there, select “Digital IDs” and click on the “Driver’s License/State ID” option. At this point, users will need to scan the front and back of their ID card and verify their identity with a face scan.
Samsung says facial scanning is for verification purposes only and does not store any biometric data. After submitting the scan, users must authenticate with their fingerprint or PIN to complete the process.

This convenience is not limited to air travel, however. Samsung envisions a future in which digital IDs can be used to verify age, enter age-restricted establishments and even rent a car. While Arizona is the first to experience this revolution, Samsung promises to add more states and features in the near future.
