Jack Ginnivan contract, determined to stay despite Lachie Schultz trade from Fremantle،

Premiership Magpies forward Jack Ginnivan wants to stay at Collingwood and fight for his place in the forward line, according to Herald Sun journalist Jon Ralph.

The Pies pulled off one of the big moves of this year’s trade period, completing a deal with Fremantle to secure Lachie Schultz while also returning a future first rounder and Pick 34 to the Dockers.

Since Schultz’s connection to the Pies emerged last week, commentators and fans alike have wondered what this means for Ginnivan’s future, given that fellow small forwards Bobby Hill and Beau McCreery are top 22 permanent Collingwood players.

While Ginnivan, who has signed up for next season, started on the field for last month’s Grand Final triumph over Brisbane, he has only played 14 games in 2023, five of which came as a starting substitute.

But Collingwood football boss Graham Wright said AFL Commercial Radio On Monday night, the Pies “did not respond to any calls” from their rivals about Ginnivan – nor did the club “seek to respond to calls”.

Speaking on Fox Footy’s Trading day On Monday night, Ralph said Ginnivan was determined to earn his place in Collingwood’s starting lineup next year.

“Jack is absolutely determined to stay – and I think that’s fantastic,” Ralph said. Trading day.

“He’s a top player, he’s 20, he’s got a lot to learn and he really wants to do it at the Pies. I love the attitude.

“The only question I would ask: Is there anything he can do to improve himself? He averaged 1.2 tackles per game – can he be an elite tackler?

“McCreery is always going to play ahead of him because he tackles, Bobby Hill is the new cult hero, Jamie Elliott is the old cult hero, Will Hoskin-Elliott can play multiple positions.”

Kangaroo David King, a two-time premier, says the AFL world should not “purge” Ginnivan after the Magpies-Schultz swap.

“I’m a Jack Ginnivan fan,” King told Fox Footy. “I think you’re always learning in football and some guys take a long time to learn who they are as a footballer, what they can be, what motivates them, how to learn, how to live – both in the game and off. hours – and he is on that path.

“It’s very rare for a guy his age to come in last year and score 40 goals in a season – they’re hard to find.

“Everyone says ‘we’ve got this guy now, we’ve got the new model, let’s throw that one away’ – that’s not how it works. It’s a family environment. You bring them in, you challenge them.

“He will put off-season goals on his list this year to come back, set records, challenge others on the edges for that same position.

“I don’t see it as a bad thing. I don’t know why we have to purge this guy because another person is coming.

Former Hawks sharpshooter Ben Dixon said Ginnivan could even play more minutes in midfield in 2024.

“’Fly’ (Craig) McRae reckons he (Ginnivan) is one of the best runners, so can he step into that midfield role? Dixon asked. Trading day.
