6:00 a.m. – “HAVE NO IDEA”: LEFT CLUB IN LURCH AS POTENTIAL PRICES ARE REVEALED FOR DIFFICULT DEALS

Deals for Mabior Chol and Esava Ratugolea have hit roadblocks in the final days of the AFL trade period, with Geelong and Richmond holding the keys.

The Hawks had hoped a three-club swap, involving Chol’s former club Richmond, would see the big forward sign a four-year deal – with a fifth-year trigger.

Jon Ralph of the Herald Sun said the stumbling block was that the Tigers were unwilling to cough up pick 29 for Hawk Jacob Koschitzke – who Hawthorn could then trade to the Suns for Chol.

“The Suns have no idea what’s going on with this three-club trade,” he said.

“Richmond has pick 50 – I think that’s about right for Koschitzke who the Hawks only offered one year for $150,000.”

If Hawthorn were to give up pick 33 for Chol, it could hurt its chances of landing father-son Will McCabe, who many are eyeing to go in the first round of the draft.

Ratugolea remains stuck as the Cats demand more than 25 picks from Port Adelaide.

But Ralph says that power holds a certain power that has yet to be explored.

He believes if Essendon can throw a future third-rounder with Brandon Zerk-Thatcher to go to Port Adelaide in exchange for Xavier Duursma, then that could help move the Ratugolea deal forward.

“Port Adelaide can then use (pick) 25 and that future Essendon third rounder for Ratugolea – everyone saves face. Everyone gets the player they want,” he said.

“If Essendon has to use a future third rounder and they get three free agents and bring in Duursma, that’s still a good deal for Essendon.”
