Australia have suffered another untimely injury setback with leg-spinner Adam Zampa suffering a back spasm ahead of Monday night’s World Cup match against Sri Lanka in Lucknow.

The 31-year-old, later named player of the match, was seen moving gingerly around the outfield throughout Australia’s five-wicket win at Ekana Stadium, sporadically grimacing in pain and limping off the field after its passage to eight.

Speaking during the post-match presentation, Zampa confirmed he injured his back during a gym session at the weekend, undergoing a fitness test ahead of Monday’s crucial match.

“To be honest, I don’t feel good,” Zampa confessed.

“I’ve had a few back spasms the last few days.

“I tried to get out of it…my back hurt really bad.”

“It was a little random, to be honest,” Zampa continued during the post-match presentation.

“I was in a worse state these last few days.

“I felt like adrenaline was going to get me through, and a little Panadeine Forte.

“It was a tough time to get through, but hopefully it’s one of those random situations that will ease in the coming days.”

Zampa, who took four wickets against Sri Lanka on Monday, is the only player in Australia’s World Cup squad; compatriot Ashton Agar was named in the 15-man provisional squad, but replaced by specialist hitter Marnus Labuschagne after injuring his calf.

Earlier this week, Zampa suffered a gash on his face after a swimming accident, where he swam against the hotel wall with his eyes closed.

Young leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha has been selected as the team’s touring reserve, but the 21-year-old can only be added to the Australian squad to replace an injured player.
