Elsewhere, Barcelona were attracted to Napoli, known to be two former clubs of Argentine legend Diego Maradona.

American stars Ricardo Pepi and Sergiño Dest will face international teammate Giovanni Reyna, with Borussia Dortmund and PSV Eindhoven going head-to-head.

Arsenal, in their first appearance in the round of 16 since 2016-17, will face two-time winners FC Porto, while Bayern Munich will face Lazio.

Paris Saint-Germain, who finished second in Group F behind Borussia Dortmund, drew Spanish side Real Sociedad.

Madrid's clash with Leipzig comes as they suffered another blow, as defender David Alaba tore an ACL during their 4-1 La Liga win over Villarreal on Sunday.

The club's director of institutional relations, Emilio Butragueño, said Madrid were unsure whether they would replace the defender in the upcoming January transfer window.

“Like Carlo [Ancelotti] said, we will see in the coming days what we decide [to do]. The team showed that it was capable of meeting any challenge. We will wait for the next few days and see what we do,” he said.

“We are facing a difficult situation; it is surprising to have so many injured, and seriously injured. [Thibaut] Courteous, [Eder] Militão and Alaba will now be absent. Despite this, we are living a fantastic time. But obviously, Alaba's injury is a setback; we will have to work together to overcome it.

The round of 16 begins with the group winners hosting the first legs, which will be played on February 13, 14, 20 and 21.

The return matches will be played on March 5, 6, 12 and 13.

This is the final season of the traditional format, before it becomes a 36-team competition with a knockout bracket based primarily on finishing positions.

The final will take place on June 1 at Wembley Stadium in London, England.
