Tottenham beat Arsenal 1-0 as Chelsea hold WSL advantage

Tottenham beat north London rivals Arsenal 1-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday to give Chelsea the opportunity to move three points clear at the top of the Women's Super League in their match on Sunday.

Martha Thomas scored what proved to be the winner against the run of play as she completed a brilliantly constructed team goal which saw the home side quickly turn defense into attack from deep in their own half.

Despite constantly peppering Tottenham's goal, Arsenal failed to equalize.

Tottenham entered the match without a league win in five years and looked determined from the start against an Arsenal side high in confidence after sweeping aside Chelsea 4-1 last weekend.

Arsenal had numerous chances in the first half, but failed to capitalize when Caitlin Foord hit the post, and Frida Maanum forced a powerful save from Tottenham goalkeeper Barbora Votíková.

The theme of missed chances continued throughout the match as the visitors dominated the possession and shooting statistics.

The result leaves Chelsea top of the table on goal difference, with the chance to move three points clear if they win their match against 11th-placed Bristol City on Sunday.
