Affordable Vision Pro Follow-Up Won’t Get Eyesight To Lower Manufacturing Cost: Report،

Most recently, we heard about how the Cupertino-based tech giant is working on the second generation mixed reality headset while the first one hasn’t even been released yet. We now have more information on how the company is channeling its resources to create a more affordable version of the $3,500 Vision Pro.

Apple could remove the external screen to lower the price of the Vision Pro

In his latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman talks about Vision Pro’s affordable tracking. To reduce its manufacturing cost, Apple will most likely remove the external display that blocks light when the user is involved in the mixed reality experience (while glowing in abstract patterns) and becomes transparent when the user wants to interact with the environment. This could drop the price to $1,500 and $2,500, which is still quite expensive.

The affordable version of the Vision Pro is also expected to feature an iPhone-grade chip (instead of the dual-chip design), have fewer cameras, and have lower quality displays with lower resolution per eye. According to Gurman, Apple has moved its staff away from developing standalone augmented reality glasses, which is considered too technically difficult. We can also assume that developing AR-only glasses would be much more expensive and therefore require the company to set a high price, which would keep it out of reach of the masses.

The Vision Pro (2nd generation) is already in preparation

Alongside the cheaper model, Apple is also working on another iteration of the Vision Pro. Recently, Gurman explained how Apple discovered that the original AR headset caused neck strain due to its weight. Therefore, the next model will be lighter and smaller, making it easier to wear for extended durations. Additionally, the company is also exploring its options for integrating prescription glasses, as working with a third party is not as simple as it thought.

Meta Officially Unveils Meta Quest 3 at $499.99, Shipping This Fall

Competition works wonders

A large part of Apple’s efforts to make its headset more affordable and lighter is to compete with the current market leader, Meta. According to a report by Counterpoint Research, Meta achieved 50% shipping market share in Q2 2023.

Additionally, the Zuckerburg-led company recently announced its Quest 3, an affordable mixed reality headset starting at $499.99 that’s much more practical for everyone. Although Apple is often late to some parties, when it does attend, more often than not it adds a lot of shine and glitter.
