Carlton stands to gain the trade period bonanza if it lands former top 10 pick Elijah Hollands from Gold Coast.

Even the Suns publicly admitted they played the 2020 No.7 selection out of position, and he is now considered likely to move to Princes Park in the next 48 hours.

It would reunite Hollands with his brother, Blues 2022 rookie Ollie, and, according to North Melbourne champion David King, give the preliminary finalists the best of the bargains available on the market.

“He had to resolve personal issues to ensure he could return to Melbourne. They have now been approved,” explained Jon Ralph of the Herald Sun on Fox Footy’s Trading Day.

“Carlton wants him, the Suns will trade him – they want to upgrade one of their picks in the 30s to one of Carlton’s picks in the 20s, they have two.

“So the Suns take $400,000 off their books, they preserve their trio of first-rounders next year. Look, he’s a pick seven, he’s an elite runner. He was played out of position on a wing. It won’t be much easier for Carlton to get into that midfield (though).

But King said: “He’ll be there, Johnny. I’m a big fan of this guy.

“You’re right, to be played out of position, put him in midfield and let him go to work. Real midfielders die on the wings; it’s just a completely different thing. You are where you are lack possession, all you do is run, behind the ball, or get back behind it.

Ralph added: “He’s running an elite 2km time trial, he’s winning it well, he’s scoring goals. He doesn’t want much. He just needs opportunities.

He suggested the Blues could send out their pick 26 while still getting pick 38 from Hollands and the Suns.

King replied, “It’s the best of the lot.”

“Of all the players that we talk about as these bargains, picks 30 and 40 or whatever, he’s the pick of the lot.”

Suns roster boss Craig Cameron acknowledged Monday that the club had played Hollands out of position and needed to be “really vigilant on all of our upcoming contracts” – highlighting a desire to lose his salary.

“First of all, to play Elijah (at AFL level), we played him a little bit out of position so we could get him in and play games. I think he’s better suited to the middle rather than on the wing,” Cameron told Trade Radio.

“With the emergence of Sam Flanders in the second half of the season, we believe Bailey Humphrey will require more time in midfield and even youngster Alex Davies has developed very well for us – we believe this area of land for us is well stocked.

“Elijah probably didn’t take the opportunity we gave him – even though we probably didn’t play him in what we think was his best position.

“I think the other thing – and I’ll be careful how I say this… we’ve actually made some very difficult decisions to get our TPP (Total Player Payments) to a position that we’re really comfortable with. comfortable. But I think going forward we have to be very careful with some of the players we have signed, if they don’t meet that contract level we will have to make some decisions. We have some young emerging talent who are going to demand certain salaries, you’ve seen what we’ve done over the last few years – which has been quite radical – to get to a position where we have to get to – and we’re not doing it. I don’t want to let that go. We We did too much work to get to the right position.

Cameron added: “Elijah is not paid exorbitantly, but I think we need to be very careful about all our contracts going forward. »
