Leak Digital Chat Station (via AndroidAuthority) posted a new phone with a 160 MP periscope camera on Chinese social media site Weibo. First, let's talk about what a periscope camera is. Since a smartphone has a small body, extending the focal length requires circumventing this limitation. So the fact that light enters a tube through the lens, bounces off a prism at a 90-degree angle, and hits the image sensor allows the phone's telephoto lens to offer greater optical zoom.

Although Digital Chat Station did not indicate which phone would sport the 160 MP periscope lens, it did mention that the device would be branded by Porsche. In a previous article, the leaker said that Honor and Porche Design are working together, which means that the Honor Magic 6 series could feature the phone with the 160MP periscope camera. It goes without saying (but we'll do it anyway) that this would be the highest resolution telephoto lens ever found on a smartphone.

The problem with such a high resolution sensor is that the sensor itself and the pixels could be small, which would negatively impact images taken with the periscope camera in dimly lit environments. This could also lead to increased noise and reduced dynamic range. Clustering pixels could allow smaller pixels to carry more information, which could compensate for some of the reduction in sensor and pixel size.

The Digital Chat Station message also mentions the use of Time of Flight 3D facial recognition which is a secure system like Apple's Face ID. The phone will also feature the Omnivision OV50K one-inch sensor for the main camera, variable aperture support similar to what we saw from Huawei, and an ultra-wide-angle camera backed by an Omnivision sensor called OV50H. The device will also offer satellite communications, something Huawei already offers on the Mate 60 series.

Here's the thing. There is a rumor going around that the Vivo X100 Pro Plus will come with a 200 MP telephoto lens. Samsung's semiconductor division has declared that “the next big thing in smartphone photography” is a 200 MP telephoto lens for smartphones. This shows that no matter what you want to think, real innovation in the smartphone industry continues to come from China.
