iPhones to get UD Face ID camera ‘after 2026’،

For two iterations, Apple took Dynamic Island with countless features and beyond. As it prepares to turn its iPhones into an all-screen slab of glass, the latest reports citing supply chain reports suggest that iPhones launched after 2026 will incorporate the feature.

It is likely that only the Face ID camera will move under the screen, while the front camera will take longer to move under the screen. According to 9to5Mac, the UD Face ID camera works by capturing reflected light from the infrared dot projector also built in next to the selfie camera. So, moving the Face ID camera under the screen is possible provided that it can read the 3D form of the shape used for facial recognition.

Currently, iPhones feature almost invisible top speakers, as only a slot is visible in the top bezel. Everything else fits neatly into the dynamic island that Apple has redesigned to serve other purposes, including serving as a window to various apps like Google Maps. It even has patents for placing the selfie camera under the display, but this compromises the overall output, making it a no-go for iPhones at the moment.

According to the latest report from South Korean newspaper TheElec, LG Innotek, one of Apple's suppliers, has started preliminary development for UPC or under-panel camera. The design is such that the camera lens holes are not visible.

iPhone shows timeline

As for the timeline, the technology aims to arrive after 2026, that is. with the iPhone 19 series in 2027. For those unfamiliar, this is almost the same timeline that DSCC's Ross Young cited a few months ago for the non-Pro iPhone 19. However, it mentions UDC and UD cameras for the Pro models, we will have to wait for more updates on this for now.

It's safe to assume that it will be a few more years before we use the UD Camera or UD Face ID. The next-gen iPhone, aka the iPhone 16 series, is expected to arrive in September 2024 and will get some crazy upgrades over the current generations.
