What Is RETVec, Google’s New AI-Based Spam Protection Tool For Gmail?،

After integrating AI-related features into all its productivity and Assistant apps, Google has released a new AI-based spam prevention algorithm for Gmail users. According to the Alphabet-owned company, the tool improves spam detection by 38%. Since the tool is developed using machine learning, it can also detect special characters. Here's everything you need to know about Gmail's new spam detection tool.

The new spam detection tool is called RETVec

The new AI-based spam detection tool is RETVec, which stands for Resilient & Efficient Text Vectorizer. Google refers to this as its most significant security upgrade over the years.

Until now, Gmail used Unicode Transformation Format text detection to filter certain words, which was not effective against homoglyphs. However, RETVec can detect even subtle changes in the fonts used by fraudsters and prevent users from interacting with the email.

RETVec can detect spam in over 100 languages

According to Google, the new AI-powered tool can detect spam in more than 100 languages, including spam based on special characters. Additionally, RETVec won't require as much processing power either. Google's security blog confirms that even smartphones can run the algorithm to prevent spam.

It will also reduce reliance on Google servers by 78 percent, allowing the company to allocate resources to a better location.

RETVec improves spam detection and requires fewer resources

Google “tested” RETVec extensively within Google to evaluate the usefulness of the tool. In its testing, the company found that it improved the spam detection rate by 38% over the baseline and reduced the false positive rate by 194%.

Use of the tool “reduced TpU model usage by 83%, making the RETVec deployment one of the largest defense upgrades in recent years.” Without a word processor, the tool works immediately on all languages and all UTF-8 characters.
