Apple Watch’s fall detection feature saves hiker after near-fatal fall،

The Apple Watch’s fall detection feature has saved many lives time and time again. Recently, he saved a Georgia man when he fell while hiking in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area earlier this year with his two dogs. The man had to undergo surgery and have titanium rods put in his legs. However, he survived thanks to the fall detection function which called 911 in time.

Mike Menand and two of his dogs were hiking in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. Menand suffered a near-fatal fall after his dogs spotted a coyote in the distance, which scared them. The dogs knocked Menand down and dragged him off the trail, leaving him in immense pain, so much so that he was unable to get the phone out of his pocket.

Luckily, the Apple Watch’s fall detection feature kicked in, triggering an automatic alert to 911 about the fatal fall. This feature has saved many lives over the years and has improved with each iteration.

Fall Detection is available on Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch Ultra and later, and Apple Watch Series 4 or later. The feature is designed to trigger whenever it senses the wearer has fallen. It sends a visual and audio signal before dialing 911 so users can tap “I’m OK” on the screen or press the digital crown to turn off the false alarm.

If the user fails to tap the on-screen prompt within a minute, Apple Watch calls emergency services with details about the wearer, their age and location, among other information they can use to track users.

Menand was lucky to survive a near-fatal fall thanks to the insertion of a titanium rod to repair his broken fall. A woman named Sandy Springs (aged 46) dropped dead in the same park, which gave Menand the creeps because he was all alone in the same park without an Apple Watch.

You can enable the fall detection feature on Apple Watch via Settings >> My Watch >> Emergency SOS >> enable “Fall Detection”. If you are over 55, the feature will be automatically enabled.
