Italian Francesco Bagnaia won the Indonesian MotoGP on Sunday thanks to a spectacular race that took him back to the top of the championship standings after the fall of his rival Jorge Martin.

Maverick Vinales (Aprilia) came in just behind the Ducati star, with Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha) third at the Mandalika circuit on the Indonesian resort island of Lombok.

Bagnaia, starting 13th, became the first driver to win a dry Grand Prix outside the top four rows since Turkey 2006 in remarkable scenes.

Martin was leading the race and the championship when he ran into the gravel, his team reacting in shock and anger.

Bagnaia then continued his charge and took the lead a third of the way into the race, refusing to give it up after a late challenge.

Australian Jack Miller was fourth before falling down the order.

The next race is the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island in a week’s time.
